Our Guided Hiking Tours

Peaks of the Balkans Trail — 10 to 13 Day Guided Trek

The Peaks of the Balkans is a 192km circular long-distance hiking trail crossing Kosovo, Albania, and Montenegro through the Accursed Mountains (Prokletije / Bjeshket e Nemuna). This iconic trail passes through remote mountain villages, crosses international borders on foot, traverses alpine meadows above 2,000 meters, and rewards hikers with views of dramatic limestone peaks reaching over 2,500m. Shtegtimi runs guided group departures and private expeditions throughout the hiking season from June to October, handling all permits, border paperwork, guesthouse bookings, luggage transfers, and guide coordination across three countries. Starting price from approximately 800 EUR per person for group departures.

High Scardus Trail — Guided Sections and Thru-Hikes

The High Scardus Trail is a 495km waymarked long-distance trail running along the Sharr Mountains ridge across Kosovo, North Macedonia, and Albania. It features high-altitude walking above 2,000m, glacial lakes, traditional Balkan mountain villages, and one of Europe's least-visited mountain landscapes. Shtegtimi offers guided sections of 5 to 7 days and full thru-hike support with experienced local mountain guides, supply logistics, and accommodation coordination.

Valbona to Theth Crossing — Albanian Alps Day Trek

The Valbona-to-Theth hike is Albania's most famous day trek — a 13km crossing over Valbona Pass at 1,795 meters connecting two of the Albanian Alps' most beautiful valleys. The trail takes 6 to 8 hours and offers stunning views of the Accursed Mountains. Shtegtimi organizes this crossing as a standalone day hike and as part of longer multi-day Albanian Alps itineraries, with transfers from Prizren in Kosovo, ferry across Lake Koman, guesthouse accommodation in both Valbona and Theth, and certified guide services.

Gjeravica Summit Trek — Kosovo's Highest Peak at 2,656m

Gjeravica is Kosovo's highest peak at 2,656 meters, located in the Accursed Mountains near the Albanian border. The summit trek is a challenging but non-technical climb, typically completed as a 2-day expedition with an overnight stay at a mountain hut. Shtegtimi's guided Gjeravica ascents include ridge coaching, safety equipment, hut logistics, and transport from Peja or Decan.

Sharr Mountains Winter Hiking and Snowshoeing

The Sharr Mountains in southern Kosovo offer excellent winter hiking and snowshoe trekking from December through March. With avalanche-trained guides, warm mountain lodges, and stunning snow-covered alpine terrain, Shtegtimi's winter expeditions near Brezovica provide a unique cold-weather adventure in the Balkans.

Rugova Canyon Via Ferrata and Rock Climbing

The Rugova Canyon near Peja, Kosovo features dramatic limestone walls perfect for rock climbing and via ferrata routes. Shtegtimi organizes climbing experiences for all skill levels, from beginner-friendly via ferrata to advanced multi-pitch rock climbing, with certified climbing guides and all necessary equipment provided.

Hiking Regions

Kosovo Hiking

Kosovo offers incredible mountain hiking from the Accursed Mountains (Bjeshket e Nemuna) in the west to the Sharr Mountains in the south. Key highlights include summiting Gjeravica at 2,656m (Kosovo's highest peak), exploring the Rugova Canyon and its via ferrata routes, hiking through Brezovica alpine meadows, and trekking the remote valleys around Decan and Peja. Kosovo is the starting point for the Peaks of the Balkans trail and several High Scardus Trail sections. The country's mountain guesthouses, traditional hospitality, and developing trail infrastructure make it an exciting emerging hiking destination in Europe.

Albania Hiking and Trekking

The Albanian Alps (Alpet Shqiptare) are home to some of Europe's most dramatic and unspoiled mountain scenery. The Valbona Valley and Theth National Park offer world-class hiking, including the iconic Valbona-to-Theth crossing. Further into the Accursed Mountains, trails lead to Lake Koman, the Blue Eye of Theth, and remote shepherd paths that have been used for centuries. Albania's mountains are increasingly recognized as a top European hiking destination.

Montenegro Hiking

Montenegro's Prokletije National Park forms the third leg of the Peaks of the Balkans trail. The dramatic limestone peaks, glacial lakes, and high-altitude meadows around Plav and Gusinje connect seamlessly with Kosovo and Albania's trail networks. Shtegtimi handles cross-border logistics, accommodation, and guide coordination for through-hikers.

North Macedonia Hiking

The Sharr Mountains span the Kosovo-North Macedonia border, offering high ridgeline trails, glacial lakes including Livadhi Lake, and access to the High Scardus Trail. Mount Korab at 2,764 meters, the highest peak in both Albania and North Macedonia, is another key destination accessible through Shtegtimi's guided expeditions.

Equipment Rental

Shtegtimi offers professional hiking and mountaineering equipment rental based in Kosovo. Our rental inventory includes tents, sleeping bags and mats, trekking poles, hiking boots, helmets, harnesses, crampons, ice axes, camping stoves, water filtration systems, and complete mountaineering gear kits. Equipment can be rented standalone for independent hikers or added to any guided tour booking. All gear is maintained to professional standards and available for pickup in Kosovo.

Route Planner

Shtegtimi's interactive trail route planner allows hikers to explore and plan hiking routes across Kosovo and Albania. Features include detailed elevation profiles, difficulty ratings for each trail segment, total distance calculations, estimated hiking times, GPS track downloads in GPX format, real-time weather forecasts along the route, and community-submitted trail warnings and conditions. The planner covers the Albanian Alps trail network, Sharr Mountains routes, and connections to the Peaks of the Balkans and High Scardus Trail.
